Problem Note 60720: A SAS® 9.4 install produces an error for Base SAS® (64-bit English Update) or Base SAS® (32-bit English Update)

DetailsAboutRate It

SAS® Deployment Wizard might report errors for the following components when installing SAS 9.4:

  • Base SAS (64-bit English Update)
  • Base SAS (32-bit English Update)

These errors are typically caused by other software (like real-time security scanning software) locking SAS files that the Base SAS English Update attempts to modify. When the Base SAS English Update cannot establish an exclusive lock on the files, Base SAS is unable to modify the files, and an error occurs in SAS Deployment Wizard that prompts the user to retry or continue. Selecting retry usually fails and the same error message occurs again. Selecting to continue past this error results in SAS® Foundation not being installed on the machine.

Possible Fix

This issue is addressed in SAS® 9.4M6 (TS1M6) by attempting to replace the file automatically three times, instead of one time, to allow time for a temporary lock from another application to be released. So, you should request a new SAS Software Depot and install SAS 9.4M6 or later.

Alternate Possible Workaround Options

Note: The recommended workaround is to use a SAS 9.4M6 or later installation package to install SAS. If the problem continues with any SAS® 9.4 version, complete the following steps:

Option 1

  1. Navigate to your anti-virus software exclusion list and add C:\program files\SASHome\ and all subfolders.
  2. Then, try the SAS install again.

Option 2

  1. Temporarily disable your anti-virus and scanning software.
  2. Then, go to Windows Services and stop any related Services.
  3. Try the SAS install again.

Option 3

  1. Install SAS.
  2. When errors occur, select Continue with Remaining Installs and finish the installation process. (Do not uninstall.)
  3. Then, start the SAS install a second time and choose Resume Deployment.

The remaining products might be installed successfully the second time.

Option 4

  1. Start your machine in Safe Mode.
  2. Try the SAS install again.

Note: In Windows Services, the Windows Installer must be running for all SAS products, such as SAS® Enterprise Guide®, to install in Safe Mode.
